The story of 6 college friends who cherish each other very dearly embark on a journey that transitions from being in college, studying together to overcoming problems in their adult lives, to finding love among the friend circle and to having a fun 2h 35m visual represented story that will make your heart go ‘aww’. This is the story of Jai and Aditi, Jai Singh Rathore the innocent, witty, dashing and humorous young man who would do anything for ‘meow’ aka Aditi. But you know what? He doesn’t love her!! Aditi Mahant, the exact opposite of Jai by nature. She will never leave an opportunity to brutally wack the crap out of someone who worries her, given them bad words or teach them their standard. She has a personality of her own, but she can’t do without Jai aka ratz. Adding on one more interesting fact, she doesn’t love Jai!!
The movie begins on an extremely emotional note, where Aditi has lost her dear one. If I’d describe the funeral scene you wouldn’t believe who it was for. Ratz and meow are at the hospital, Rats being the gentle man he is brought her a cup of filter coffee whilst seated on a hospital bench in the hope that the doctor would arrive and give them a good news. Instead the exact opposite happens. You see Aditi holding on to Jai and crying loudly because she feels so hurt. Next is a funeral scene, where all of Aditi’s 4 friends and Jai are seated in her backyard to wish for peace and solace of Aditi’s dear cat – Radha, who just passed away.
Then plays the typical “Bollywood” scene, where the girl is upset and her hero sings her a song to cheers her up. In the song ‘Kabhi Kabhi Aditi‘ we experience the same scene. Jai has multiple failed attempts to cheer his meow, but she refuses to acknowledge any of them. The movie is filled with banter of their own. But but but, the catch to this whole movie is that it’s being explained at the airport while Jai and Aditi’s friends await to pick them up. This story is being narrated by their 4 friends to Jignesh’s date who by the end of the story turns into his girlfriend. I mean, how great is that??
Aditi and Jai’s friends have a persona of their own, there’s Bombs who by character is a slow-mo. She laughs unnecessarily and gets every joke 10 seconds after it is shared. But she finds her lover boy Rotlu who is a part of the close knitted friend circle. Rotlu by name means ‘cry baby’. He’s always crying about how sad something around him is. Shaleen is like the man of the group. She knows exactly who is pursuing whom in the group and she’s always trying to unite the gang. She was the first to call out Jai and Aditi’s romance, even before they knew it. And lastly, there’s Jiggy, Jignesh. He’s the driver of the group, he owns a car, he’s always got permission for late night parties, flexible pocket money to spend in the canteen and most importantly, this whole story leading him into a successful date.
The movie moves on to many small fun elements such as a fun evening at a club turned into an eventful night for Jai as he met his girlfriend in the middle of the club afraid of some goons and trying to protect herself. Despised as ‘Nalini’ with some dangerous and contagious health issues ‘Meghna’ is one of the main reasons for Jai to realise his true love. This is a real movie scene that would be a dream for any romantic. Meghna ha sthis stupid game that she loves to play which is called ‘What’s this?’. The game is basically creative storytelling where you find something unusual around you and then describe it using your imagination. It’s even funnier when Aditi tries it and her expressions prove that she hates it sooo much.
The whole gang with Meghna goes for a fun outing. This is described in a beautiful song called ‘Nazrein Milaana Nazrein Churaana‘. It’s apicnic that everyone is in pairs and having fun with their significant others, but Aditi. She’s just trying to fit in, she’s upset but she can’t blame Jai, because it was her idea to find for him a girlfriend, because she doesn’t love him, remember? So before jai laid his eyes on Meghna at the club, Aditi was on the look for a potential girlfriend for Jai. Now she regrets it so much, because she’s alone at the picnic, drying her own hair.
Then comes entry of the good looking, man of dreams, and avid traveler – Sushant Singh Rajput. He’s a tall and handsome, bulky man who has a class of his own kind. Aditi’s first visit to his room made her feel like she’s won the world and landed at the right guys door. Sushant has pictures of various trips on his wall. On enquiring, he tells Aditi that he takes a lot of mini vacations in the middle of his work days to maintain balance. Aditi is delighted to hear him say this. They go out on a date or two and deem fit for each other. While on the other side, Jai and Meghna are doing well themselves, they’re learning about each other, going on dates and having fun.
Fast forward to a day in Aditi’s life, her creative artist younger brother who never leaves his room or house comes out of his room to greet Sushant. He shows Sushant his room, calls him ‘Jiju’ – brother-in-law and gifts him a painting. The parents and Aditi are shook to see this. Exasperated Aditi questions Amit why did he do that and his response was if Aditi wanted to see his room. This is the first time in years anyone has ever stepped into her brothers room and Aditi is shook on seeing how beautiful the room is. Its abstract and colorful, most of the walls are painted and he sits her down to speak with him. He gives her a complete reality check on her relationship with Jai. In hindsight, Amit hates Jai very very much because Jai is everything his parents wanted Amit to be. But he rationalizes with Aditi and points out to her that Sushant isn’t a good fit for her. He explains to her that Sushant is a selfish and disrespectful man. Aditi doesn’t accept the fact yet that she is in love with Jai and the scene ends.
A few days later its Jiggy’s surprise birthday and he invites all his friends for a midnight party. He also invite Meghna and Sushant along with Jai and Aditi. While Jai agrees to get Meghna along, Aditi informs Jiggy that Sushant has some other plans and they might not be able to attend, but she assures him to try and be there. Aditi and Sushant attend another party earlier that night and Sushant bumps into an ex of his. While he is a little tipsy he tries to force her to dance with him. Her ex’s current boyfriend on sees this forces Sushant to back off and punches him in the face. Typical bollywood, hahaha. Aditi drags Sushant home and on the way Jiggy calls her to enquire if she would still show up. On hearing her say no to JIggy, Sushant asks her for the address and decides to take her there because he feels responsible for ruining the earlier party. When they get there, you can see Jai and Meghna at the balcony and jai waiting for Aditi to arrive. He doesn’t say anything though. Everyone is happy as Aditi finally made it to one of the groups party. But Jai, discreetly is the happiest. He has a short conversation with Sushant wherein Sushant is seen taunting Jai for him and Aditi were close back in the day. But jai being Jai, assures him that they are still close and they always will be.
At the party, everyone starts dancing to the music. The old friends start dancing to their signature steps from the very famous song Pappu can’t dance and Jiggy asks Aditi to teach Meghna the steps. As Aditi starts teaching her the steps, Meghna adds her own spice to the song and Aditi feels left out on the dance floor. Looking at this sad moment, Sushant tributes a song to Aditi and the vibe of the dance floor change sfrom fun to romance in no time. He asks Aditi to dance with her, while Bombs and Rotlu slow jive together and Jiggy and Shaleen jive. Jai and Meghna are seen dancing together, but Jai is neither happy nor comfortable seeing Aditi with Sushant this close. And on the other side of the dance floor, Aditi is seen reciprocating the same feeling of resentment towards the song ‘Kahin Toh Hogi Woh‘. By the end of the song Meghna is seen held tight in the arms of an uncomfortable Jai and Aditi’s face been romantically held by Sushant for a memorable kiss. The moment Jai sees this, he pushes Meghna off his chest and feels a moment of shock.
The next morning Meghna comes over to address the elephant in the room as they had an argument over this feeling Jai had over seeing Aditi intimately involved with Sushant. Their argument begins at night but it doesn’t end there. Meghna tries to joke about Jai being in love with Aditi and the joke turns out to be a reality Jai was running away from. And that is it, they break up. A few weeks later at Aditi and Sushant’s dinner date, they are seen discussing their future. Aditi mentions to Sushant that she wants to pursue further studies as she is only 21 and too young to get married, but Sushant is being persuasive about he moving to NYC after their engagement for her to study at NYU. In the meanwhile, Meghna spots Aditi and Sushant and walks towards their table to greet them. During their conversation, Aditi learns that Meghna and Jai broke up because Jai was in love with someone else. Sushant throw a big tantrum over this while walking towards their car in the parking lot. On insisting much he gets frustrated with Aditi to answer his question and slaps her. Then he drives away with his car, leaving Aditi behind in shambles.
Over the next day Aditi is seen sitting at their friends spot watching a sunset and contemplating. She leaves her phone behind at home and everyone’s worried calling her and being unable to reach her. But not Jai, he arrives right there and learns that Aditi has a flight that night to NYC. On confronting her about it, Aditi says she wants to pursue her Masters degree from NYU in film making and that admission at NYU is not easy. She just wants to explore her options in that city. Jai tries to stop her from going and asks her about Sushant’s thoughts on this decision. She explains to him that they broke up. When Jai confronted her as to why she didn’t tell him about this, Aditi tells him that he also didn’t mention about his and Meghna’s break up. As Sushant had slapped Aditi, the mark remained quite evidently on her cheek and she tried very hard to keep it away from Jai seeing it, but to no avail. On him seeing the mark on her face he questions her and she says that it was Amit, her brother who did this while they were fighting. But Jai does not believe it. Aditi says goodbye to him and leaves as she needs to catch her flight later that night.
Now Jai, a man of principles, who has never ever hit a person in his life, goes on the biggest trail of prejudice of his life. He walks in to Sushant’s house that evening and requests Sushant’s dad to ask him to send Sushant to the seating area inside the house as his dad welcomed Jai into the bungalow. Now we can see the living room and Sushant walking down the stairs. The men are in the living room by themselves. Jai tells Sushant “tumne Aditi pe haath nahi uthana chahiye tha” “you should not have raised your hand on Aditi”. Sushant is seen boxing Jai right in his face. Jai gets up, and repeats the same statement. Again Sushant is seen boxing him right in his face. But, the third time he raises his hand, Jai is seen stopping him and hitting him back. Within two boxes from Jai, Sushant has fallen unconsciously on the floor with a bleeding mouth and nose. Apparently, he was karate black belt and gym enthusiast. Jai, by background is a Ranjhore ka Rathore. He is basically from the Rathor clan in Rajasthan, whose widowed mother moved to Mumbai after the death of her husband because he was the most feared king in the kingdom of Ranjhore. Jai’s father died a historic death in a fight after killing almost 90% of the rivals, single handedly.
In Jai’s younger day’s he had promised his mother he would never raise his hand on anyone ever, because she hated violence. She taught him to be an advocate of peace only because she had lost her husband due to war and rage. To keep Jai away from all this misery she took up the role of his father and mother and restarted her life in the city. It’s evening and almost time for Aditi to head to the airport. But there’s a knock on Jai’s door and his mother opens it only to see Jai bruised and she gets really upset. Jai instantly apologizes and says “Sorry maa, usne Aditi pe haath uthaya” “Sorry mom, he raised his hand on Aditi”. Jai then enters his room, freshens up and is ready to leave for the airport to profess his love to Aditi. There his mother, Savitri is seen sitting, holding her head, disappointed in her son. He walks towards the chair she is seated at and apologizes to her and explains that he loves Aditi and he cannot let her leave just like this, so he is all fresh to go to the airport. Just as he opens the door to leave there’s inspector Waghmare, a police officer that Savitri always has a tiff with. He is seen arresting Jai. Sushant’s father filed this complaint against Jai.
Aditi is seen trying to call Jai, but his phone is constantly busy as Savitri is frantically seeing venting to hear friend about her concern for Jai to be arrested by Waghmare who she doesn’t like. Jai is seen sitting in the lock up trying to explaining to Waghmare that he needs to make one call. On Waghmare enquiring he realises this is about Jai’s love life, but as he has a tiff with Savitri, he doesn’t allow Jai to make a call. In the background there are two goons who are brought in by another inspector who seem quite thrilled about being at the police station. They have been brought in because they were drunk and wacked two people outside a bar, of which one is admitted to the hospital and the other is extremely afraid to make a statement for the police to arrest them. Waghmare tells the junior to leave them as there is no one to file the case, on listening to this the goons get upset and slap the police officer. They are then locked up in the same jail as Jai and the two goons are thrilled about it.
The goons in the lock up immediately recognize Jai form the club where he met Meghna as he had smartly played a bluff on them to take her away from their side. On enquiring with them why they were so happy they start to explain that there are 3 fundaments to become a Ranjhore ka Rathore, which is to transform from a boy to man. On hearing Ranjhore Jai mentions that his dad belonged from there. The goons start asking follow up questions and they recognize him as their childhood friend. The two goons are Vinay “Bagheere” Singh Rathod and Kuber “Baloo” Singh Rathore who are Jai Singh Rathor’s cousin, they used to play together in Ranjhore as cousins. Over dinner they enquire with Jai how he landed up in jail and he mentions that he hit someone and hence was arrested. The brother’s smile at each other as their 3 fundaments are 1. To beat someone up, 2. To be arrested and sent into the lock up, and 3. To ride a horse. Bagheere and Baloo, even in the city rode their horse as it is a part of them. Now Jai had no knowledge of these fundaments as his mom never shared any background information with him from his childhood.
Jai asks the brother for a favor as he starts to explain about Aditi to them. The brothers are extremely supportive and tell Waghmare who they are. They are actually the kings of Ranjhore and their father is contesting as the MLA from Ranjhore, hence nobody was arresting them there. This is why they came to Mumbai as nobody knew their identity and could be arrested, thus completing their 3 fundaments. Now they make a call to a senior of Waghmare and he has to release Jai form jail. It’s midnight and there’s a public strike so Bagheere and Baloo offer their horse to Jai, and he leaves the police station trusting his inner Rathore as he has never ridden a horse before. Jai has now completed all the 3 fundaments to transform from a boy to a man an din successfully becoming a Ranjhore ka Rathore.
Jai is seen riding the horse on the empty streets of Mumbai, chasing time to stop the love of his life from leaving the city. On his way, we see Savitri and her friend in the car seeing Jai ride a horse. Now, Jai reached the airport and Aditi has completed security and is on her way to the boarding gate. Jai is seen just running through security, baggage check and dodging the police in the airport as they think he is a terrorist. In the background the slow version of ‘Kahin Toh Hogi Woh’ is heard. Aditi reaches for her phone and learns that Jai went to Sushant’s house and hit him for slapping her in the face the other day. For someone like Jai, an absolute believer of non-violence, peaceful and calm man, this was huge! Aditi is seen smiling in disbelief and immediately the police is seen making a circle with guns loaded. Everyone is trying to figure what was happening. There he was, caught on the floor by a police, Jai was right there. He screamed “meow” and Aditi is seen trying to peek over the head of the officer in front of her.
One night at the roof of Aditi’s house the six friends are seen seated, discussing what song they would sing to the love of their lives. And Jai sings “tera mujhse hai pehele ka naata koi, uhi nahi dil lubata koi. Jaane tu.. ya jaane naa, maane tu.. ya maane naa”. And in that moment, on the floor of the airport, surrounded by 50 police he is seen singing that exact same song for Aditi, finally! She exclaims in joy, pushes the officer from front of her and comes running towards Jai to hug him. Jai says “Mat jao Meow, I love you”, to which Aditi says, “ofcourse nahi jaa rahi hoon Ratz, you idiot”. Then the police officer is seen explaining this scene to his superior over the walkie-talkie. When the officers senior asks him what song was he singing, the officer had to sing it all over again which was pretty embarrassing for him.
The last scene of the movie is when the officer is handing over Aditi’s luggage to her and warning Jai about ever pulling off another stupid stunt like this ever again. He warns Jai to not do it again and also tells him to never sing again, because someone or the other will definitely shoot him for singing. The whole gang of 6 is seen hugging each other. Jai and Aditi are seen going home on the horse and her friends taking her luggage in their car.
At this moment, in the present day, Aditi and Jai are seen returning from their honeymoon. This movie is a story being told by Bombs, Rotlu, Shaleen and Jiggy, to Jiggy’s date. Jiggy’s date is so worked up and enthusiastic about hearing such a deep knitted story about the love of Aditi and Jai, she hugs them by calling them “Ratz” “Meow”, and Aditi and Jai are completely confused but they yet welcome her. On asking their friends who she was, she exclaims that she is Jiggy’s girlfriend. In the end, it all worked out for the 7 seven of them.
