Ingredients:
- 1 cup rice
- 1/2 cup moong dal (split mung beans)
- 4 cups boiling water
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi)
- 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- 6-8 curry leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon ajwain (carom seeds)
- 1-inch piece ginger, finely chopped
- 1 carrot, diced
- 1/2 cup peas
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt to taste
- For tempering: 1 tablespoon ghee, 1 teaspoon mustard seeds, and 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
Procedure:
- First up, wash the rice and moong dal thoroughly, changing the water 3-4 times or until it runs clear.
- In a saucepan or kadhai, add the washed rice and moong dal.
- Pour in the 4 cups of boiling water.
- Add ghee, turmeric powder, asafoetida, curry leaves, ajwain, chopped ginger, diced carrot, peas, bay leaf, and salt.
- Then close the lid of the saucepan and cook over low flame for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture becomes soft.
- In a separate small pan, heat ghee for tempering. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
- Pour the tempering over the cooked rice and dal mixture.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
